Football is back. While the NFL did return on Thursday, the Chiefs will return to regular season action this Sunday against the Jacksonville Jaguars in Florida. Before the game, here are some notes to look at.
For the Chiefs, head coach Andy Reid said that safety Jordan Lucas had back spasms, so he was held out of practice on Friday and is listed as questionable. Defensive tackle Xavier Williams was sick , and Reid said, “We should be OK there.” Defensive Coordinator Steve Spagnuolo has said that if Williams is not available for action, Derrick Nnadi will get most of the reps.
The Jaguars, on the other hand, have bigger issues when it comes to the injury front. Starting left tackle Cam Robinson’s left knee reportedly “just gave out” Friday, per ESPN’s Michael DiRocco. Robinson is listed as doubtful, and the Jaguars’ swing tackle, Cedric Ogbuehi, is out with a hamstring injury. Jaguars head coach Doug Marrone has said that second-year lineman Will Richardson will start at left tackle. Richardson, a former right tackle at NC State, has yet to play in an NFL snap.
Richardson will be assigned to block Chiefs defensive end Frank Clark for most of the game. This will be a very difficult task for the second-year left tackle and I fully expect the Chiefs to pressure Foles from that side of the ball.
“That sucks. You never want to see a guy injured or hurt in any sport, especially a great competitor. Cam, I’ve had the chance to play him once, when I was in Seattle, when we played Jacksonville two years ago. He’s a great competitor and a guy I look forward to going against. Hopefully, his injury, he could get that better over the next few weeks. I hope his doctors and stuff can handle that — to make sure he gets back into action. But the football game is serious; it’s tough, and it takes a toll on you sometimes. Myself, just being able to go out there, no matter who it is, whether it’s Cam or it’s his backup or his backup, I’m giving my all. I don’t push the brakes for nobody. At the end of the day, everybody’s a victim in my eyes,” Clark told Arrowhead Pride following the news of Cam Robinson’s injury.
The Jaguars will also be missing backup tight end Josh Oliver. Defensive tackle Marcell Dareus is questionable with an elbow injury.
